About

Martin Hyde
Wildlife Artist

Wildlife artist who loves painting big cats, wildlife and accepts pet portrait commissions.

Artist Biography

Born in Bath in 1958 and raised in the village of Sutton Benger near Chippenham, Wiltshire, Martin’s creative journey began later in life, following a dynamic and successful career. In the 1980s, he made his mark as a rally driver, winning the Welsh Tarmac and National series, while also nurturing a lifelong passion for golf.

Martin ran his own businesses in the holiday park and commercial finance sectors before retiring in 2020. It was then that he discovered a new passion: painting. Entirely self-taught, he began with watercolour landscapes before transitioning to soft pastels and pastel pencils. This allowed him to explore his deep fascination with wildlife—particularly big cats such as leopards, lions, cheetahs, and tigers—capturing their spirit and detail with remarkable precision.

Now living in Sidbury, East Devon he exhibited in 2024 for the first time with the Sidmouth Society of Artists at Kennaway House in Sidmouth. Out of nearly 300 pieces, his work earned 2nd place in the People’s Vote, marking a significant milestone in his artistic journey.

Alongside his wildlife studies, Martin also accepts commissions for pet portraits and has completed numerous detailed works of dogs, cats, and horses. Known for his meticulous attention to detail, Martin finds great satisfaction in the challenges and rewards each new piece presents.
